Get Fit On Lancaster Avenue!

Posted by Samantha Lazar on December 7, 2009

We’ve all heard that Philadelphia is one of the fattest cities in America. Looking around University City, though, you’d never know it. I have a theory that if it weren’t for U City pulling down the average per capita poundage, Philly would consistently rank as number one. Why is this? It could have something to do with West Philly’s plethora of parks and trails, the bustling farmers’ market in Clark Park, the health-conscious shops and hipsters lining Baltimore Avenue (I think being skinny is a prerequisite for hipsterdom), all the university athletic facilities, or maybe the many varied fitness opportunities along Lancaster Avenue. Since I’ve already profiled most of the others, let’s put the spotlight on Lancaster Ave.

First up is the Gwendolyn Bye Dance Center at 3611 Lancaster. The studio offers classes for adults and children (including a summer camp) in a whole range of styles, including Ballet, Modern, Eclectic Funk, and African. You can stop by for just one session, or take a whole bunch. For those who love to boogie but hate the gym, dancing is a great way to actually enjoy exercising. The center is also home to Dancefusion, a modern dance repertory company, and their junior company for aspiring professional dancers, Fusion2.

Nearby, at 3527 Lancaster, is Power Yoga Works. The studio caters to all levels, from beginners to yogi masters, and has flexible class schedules and course options. It focuses on “power vinyasa yoga,” which is a little different from your typical gym’s yoga class. It can build strength, increase endurance, release tension, and create more flexibility throughout the whole body. And even though no one is too old, stiff, or out of shape for it, this isn’t for sissies – expect to leave the studio drenched in sweat!

Dancing and yoga not your thing? How about taking up fencing? The eighteen-year-old Fencing Academy of Philadelphia (FAP) is just a few doors down at 3519 Lancaster. They train beginners and established champions through group classes, private sessions, and open bouts. The prices are extremely reasonable, and fencing is a great – and unique – workout for your mind and your body. Plus, those white outfits and metal masks are super sexy.

And finally, even though I’ve talked about it before, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention it: for the ultimate shape-up head to Bodyrock Bootcamp and Executive Training at 3858 Lancaster, where personal training, semi-private classes, or “boot camp” will whip you into shape in no time!

With so many fitness options in the neighborhood, why not get a jump on those New Year’s resolutions?
