Second Mile Thrift Stores

Posted by Samantha Lazar on November 10, 2009

Oh, Second Mile, how I love thee. Lest I forget you, now that I don’t live just a block away, I’m reminded of your wonders every time I open my closet or walk into my living room. Swoon.

So, I like this place. A lot. ”The Second Mile Center” is not just a thrift store, but a whole thrift compound, taking up the entire block on 45th Street between Walnut and Locust. There’s “Second Mile,” the original sprawling store which is packed to the gills with insanely cheap clothes and shoes, “Second Mile Too,” full of bric-a-brac, jewelry and accessories, “Second Mile Also” (books and electronics), and finally “Second Mile Furniture” (self-explanatory, I hope!). Second Mile is easily the most popular consignment destination in West Philly, and for good reason. The huge selection and rock-bottom prices ensure that you’ll find whatever it is you’re looking for and your wallet won’t take a beating.

The clothing store is my favorite of the bunch. It has rows upon rows of clothes arranged by color (odd, but interesting), and as long as you have the time to sort through the racks you’re bound to find something awesome. There’s not too much in the way of true vintage (but really, does any thrift shop have much if it nowadays?), but you won’t even miss it. In addition to fun clothes for everyday wear, there are some truly bizarre things mixed in, like hot pink zebra print tights, leather-fringed beaded vests, and purple velvet smoking jackets. I’ve pulled together many a Halloween costume from these racks! I also love their shoes, and on my last visit scored a sweet pair of brown leather boots for just $3.

If you’re looking for some affordable furniture, make sure to pop in across the street. Though not huge, the selection at “Second Mile Furniture” is always changing and includes some quality pieces. Nothing beat up or falling apart here, and they’re often willing to bargain on the already-low prices. I picked up a classy dark wood, glass-topped end table for $20. In case I haven’t yet convinced you to check this place out, it’s all for a good cause: their mission is to help marginalized people (those struggling to overcome addiction, abuse, or crime), and to give them a second chance. The non-profit store is open 6 days a week (closed on Sundays), and they’re always willing to accept donations and even pick them up for you!
