Tangled Up In Blue

Posted by Kelly White on July 5, 2009

Lovers are pink. Madmen are blue. At least that's what the chalkboard designates at University City's latest coffee lounge. Fans of specialty coffee roasters Counter Culture were foaming at the mouth waiting for Lovers & Madmen to let them in. Set across the street from the vibrant pinkness of Distrito, the coffeeshop beckons with a blue exterior.

The first sign of assurance upon stepping into L&M? A stack of Barista magazines. The second? One sexy La Marzocco machine in a glossy shade of, you guessed it, blue. And how's this for a third: Lovers & Madmen only serves drinks in one size. The simplification of your beverage order attained, and you're on your way to the comfy blue sofa in the middle of the well-lit space. Sunlight pours in through large surrounding windows. Vitamin D and caffeine, check and check.

The ultimate coffee requires one heck of a croissant, and you can get your buttery fingerprints from Four Worlds Bakery's plain, almond, or chocolate pastries. Care to back up your buzz with a touch of protein? There's quiche all the way from the Under the Oak Cafe. Whether for love or insanity, some of us will do anything for a latte etched with a rosetta.

I like this place but the summer hours are too late for me in the morning (I need my coffee at 7:30am!).
